The Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission has set out the next stages for designing and building a memorial in its latest report. Construction of a permanent memorial to those affected by the Grenfell fire could begin in 2026, according to the new report.

The Commission says the location, on the current site of the tower, should include a garden, monument and space for grieving. It has called on the government to honour a commitment to fund the building and its long-term maintenance.

The report follows four years of work to understand the Grenfell community’s wishes for a fitting and beautiful memorial.

In conducting its research, the commission looked at memorials to other tragedies around the world including the Aberfan memorial in Wales, 7/7 in London and the 9/11 memorial in the US.
